Lily's Getting Comfortable -- August 21, 2006

Little Lily is getting all kinds of stuff in her isolet. She loves to sleep on her tummy and cuddle up to her blankets. She is up to 12 cc's every 3 hours on her feeding, and weighs 3 pounds. She has had a little problem breathing when being held the last couple of days, so the nurses are watching her close. She hasn't had to go back to oxygen yet, but she may. Babies Lily's size expend a lot of energy with everything that they do, it is very easy for them to tire themselves out, just by doing a small task like digesting food. She still gets her food through a tube going directly to her stomach through her nose. While she is being fed we use a pacifier for her to suck on so she can associate sucking with food digestion. Before each feeding they check her stomach to see if she has food left from the last feeding. Over the last few days she has been digesting all the food, that's why they have been increasing her feeding. The next big step for her over the next few weeks will be to transition to a nipple for feeding. This may be difficult since sucking, swallowing, and breathing are not easy tasks for a baby her size.
